KNN (Kurdish News Network) was established in 2008 as a subsidiary of the Wusha Corporation, an independent Kurdish media group, and commenced broadcasts on December 31, 2008.
KNN, associated with the Wusha Corporation for Kurdish Independent media, transitioned following the Gorran Conference in 2014. The media outlets of the Gorran Movement were consolidated into a unified organ of the movement, which includes KNN TV Channel, Gorran Radio, Gorran website, Sbeiy website, and KNNC.
Headquartered in Grdi Zargata, Slemani, Iraqi Kurdistan Region, KNN primarily operates as a Kurdish-language channel focusing on local and international current affairs. The channel delivers comprehensive coverage on economics, politics, sports, culture, documentaries, and the arts. Apart from news updates, KNN offers in-depth interviews with notable Kurdish politicians and intellectuals. Additionally, it produces a diverse range of documentaries and local interest programs while adapting foreign content for Kurdish audiences.
KNN boasts a team of journalists and correspondents exceeding 300 people spread across the region. It maintains a network of correspondents covering Kurdistan and Iraq with local offices in Irbil (Hawler) and Kirkuk, as well as an office in Istanbul, Turkey.
Notably distinct in Kurdistan for its independence from direct political party control, KNN stands out as the sole news channel during its inception considered entirely unbiased in both material selection and reporting.
While media outlets affiliated with some political factions often portray government activities positively, KNN endeavors to present a more balanced view by addressing critical issues within the region through insightful analysis rather than focusing solely on positives.
Despite aligning with the broader goals of the Wusha Corporation – aiming to confront inequalities and obstacles to reform in Kurdistan – KNN advocates for political, educational, intellectual, social, and economic progress to better serve the Kurdish populace.
Through addressing prevalent challenges, KNN seeks to empower Kurdish citizens toward a more democratic society. Operating on the principle that freedom of expression is a right rather than a privilege, KNN functions as both an information source – inviting public opinion – and a platform fostering open discussions instead of stifling them.
